National Press Day

India celebrates November 16 every year as National Press Day, which is observed in honor of the Press Council of India. The day aims to highlight the presence of the free and responsible press in India.

The First Press Commission envisioned a Press Council in India with the aim of protecting the freedom of the press and setting high standards in journalism.  As a result, on July 4, 1966, the Press Council was established in India, which started its formal work from November 16, 1966.  Since then, every year 16th November is celebrated as 'National Press Day'.

In the present times, the field of journalism has become wide. Journalism is the art and method of conveying informative, educative and entertaining messages to the masses. Newspaper is like an answer book, which has lakhs of examiners and countless reviewers. Examiners and critics of other mediums are also their target audience. Factality, realism, balance and objectivity are its basic elements. But their shortcomings are proving to be a big tragedy in the field of journalism today. Whether a journalist is trained or untrained, it is known to all that there should be factuality in journalism. But today the tendency to create sensationalism by distorting, exaggerating or reducing facts has started increasing in journalism.

Media and Society
Journalism was a mission before independence. After independence it became a production. In between, when the press was censored during the Emergency, journalism once again became a mission to eradicate corruption for a short period of time. Gradually, journalism has changed from production to sensation and commission from sensation. But it is not fair to blame the media alone for all these social evils. When one part of the vehicle breaks down, the other part also breaks down and gradually the whole vehicle becomes unusable. Some similar situation is being implemented in the society. There is always change in the society. The options keep arising. In such a situation, the society comes in a state of confusion. In this situation, the media gives a new direction to the society. Media affects the society, but sometimes somehow the media gets affected by the society
